

It is with saddened hearts that the family of Helen DeSouza announce her passing on Sunday, October 22, 2023, at the age of 90. Helen was predeceased by her parents, Assunciao and Joaquim Fernandez and her brother, Eddie Fernandez, of Nairobi, Kenya. She is survived by her children, Maria DeSouza, Michelle Dermott (Terry), and Carlito (Renee) DeSouza; by her sister Lourdes Rodrigues (Oliver); her grandchildren Matteo DeSouza Ram, Maya Dermott, Marcos and Guillaume DeSouza as well as her many nieces and nephews.
Helen was born in Nairobi, Kenya to parents who had emigrated from Goa, India. After finishing her studies, Helen worked as a school teacher and then as an office assistant for the East African Airways. She moved to Canada in 1969 with her young family and lived in Montreal until 1980, when she and the family moved to Regina, Saskatchewan. Helen worked in the Continuing Education department of the government of Saskatchewan until her retirement.
Helen loved music and played the cello as a teenager in school and then the piano as an adult. She had fond memories of singing in the church choir throughout her childhood and as a young adult. She looked forward to catching live concerts and musicals in Regina with her friends whenever possible.
Helen's life had many bumpy roads and challenges, but she held onto her independent, positive and sunny nature through most of it. She counted her family and close friends as cherished blessings in her life.
