James (Jim) Duggleby passed away on Sunday, August 1, 2021 from complications of Parkinson’s disease and Alzheimer’s disease. He is survived by his wife Pat; son Jeremy (Christine) and their children Ellorie and Conall; his daughter Kate (Andre) and their daughter Alice; Jim’s five brothers John (Lynn), Tom (Wendy), Gerry (Sandy), Mike (Lynne) and Pat (Julie), brother-in-law Dick Robinson; along with their children and grandchildren. His extended family in Canada and Ireland share our sorrow.
Jim was, at heart, a writer. In the spring of March 2020 he wrote “I can’t recall a time when I didn’t love writing. Fiction and non-fiction, short stories and long, history and futurism, magazines and newspapers. I love writing them all.” And write he did, in a career that took him from his first years as a reporter for the Saskatoon Star-Phoenix to business publications in Vancouver, to publisher of the Atlantic Co-operator in Antigonish, Nova Scotia, to Credit Union Central in Regina and finally to the University of Regina. He was known for his wordsmithing, his storytelling, his puns and his dad jokes. His wee book of memoirs, Serenity Unhinged, was published in July 2020.
He loved to draw, a talent he inherited from his grandmother and mother. His appreciation of, and ability to play, all kinds of music was a constant throughout his life. The love of music is also evident in the talents of his children and grandchildren.
A small family remembrance will be held later in August, with another gathering planned for his numerous friends and family in early fall. In the meantime, enjoy a glass of Guinness on a hot day. He would join you if he could. Sláinte.
We would like to thank, from the bottom of our hearts, the staff at College Park II, Unit 5A at the Regina General Hospital and 3A at the Pasqua Hospital. His care team was unsurpassed in their caring and professionalism. We couldn’t have done this without you.
Flowers gratefully declined. Memorial donations may be made to Dying with Dignity Canada (https://www.dyingwithdignity.ca/ ), the Alzheimer’s Society or the Parkinson’s Society.
Fond memories and expressions of sympathy may be shared at www.victoriaavenuefuneral.com for the Duggleby family.
