Martin passed away peacefully at Echo Lodge on February 23, 2025 with his wife by his bedside. He is survived by his wife Margie; daughter Benita (Skip); son Brad (Trina); grandchildren Tyler and Robin; great grandchild nicknamed Precious; siblings Elizabeth (Allen) and Anita (Gordon); as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and friends. Martin is predeceased by his parents George and Eva; and first wife Shirley.
After retiring from Wascana Centre Authority, Martin made his home in Fort Qu’ Appelle. Martin loved the lake and spent his retirement years fishing on Echo Lake, in the summer from his boat and in the winter through the ice. On fishing days he would wake up, make a coffee for his thermos, then jump on his quad and head to the lake. He was proud of his hand made fishing lures and Martin knew how to catch a fish.
Martin had a strong Christian faith and attended the Catholic Church in Fort Qu’ Appelle. He was an avid gardener and with his wife he and Margie had a bountiful garden. Every year they canned or froze a variety of preserves including salsa, sour dill pickles, beet borscht, beet and bean pickles and jams that were a prized Christmas gift to their family. Many were recipients of the delicious cucumbers and tomatoes grown in the garden.
Prior to needing nursing home care, Martin explored warmer climates in the United States. For a number of years, he pulled their 5th wheel to Texas, Yuma, or Mesa where he and Margie enjoyed visiting local sites, putting his dance steps to good use at Polka parties, park barbeques, and lunches. They eventually settled on spending the winters in their trailer in Mesa and looked forward to seeing their friends there every winter. Once travelling was no longer possible, the trailer was parked in a seasonal site in Indian Head, where Friday night happy hour was enjoyed with friends at their campsite.
Parkinson’s disease eventually led to Martin making his home at Echo Lodge. He appreciated the visits from everyone. Thanks to the staff at Echo Lodge for the care given to Martin. In memory of Martin, those who wish to may make a donation to Parkinson Canada.
