Mary Eve (nee Klein) Selinger left us on June 28, 2026, at 7:17am on a calm Sunday morning. She had a deep love for the community she found within the Holy Cross Parish church. Fitting she should choose a Sunday to join her departed family and the many friends she met at church.
Mom is survived by remaining family, her sister Terry Leier, her sisters in law – Mabel Klein, Lila Selinger, and Pauline Selinger as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Mom was predeceased by many family members and close friends during her 97 years.
Born July 20, 1928, on a farm near Fox Valley, Saskatchewan, Mary was the eldest of four children. From a young age, she was counted on to work the farm, cook, bake, and care for her younger siblings, George, Terry, and Emil.
She met the love of her life, Frank Selinger, at a “Hot Dog Party” and was quickly welcomed into his large family. Frank and Mary tied the knot on June 5, 1947, at St. Mary’s Church in Regina. They had seven children together along with spouses/partners, grandchildren and great grandchildren—Greg (Noel), Bernie (Alicia) Candy(Leo), Diogo, Benjamin, Sebastian, Leah, Cielo; Ken (Jean), Emily(Dustin), Carter (Mica), Sonny, Franco; Lorna (Paul), Casey (Ronna), Cooper, Walker, Chloe (Dylan), Catie, Brennan (Katie), Emmett; Tom ( Kim), Joshua (Rhonda), Parker, Paisley, Leah, Allyssa, Alyvia, Robin(Kyle), Rylie, Thomas; David (Wendy), Greta, Jonah; Diana (David) Sophia (Mike), Nicholas. Nanny was a busy lady!
The strength and resilience she showed during her life’s hardships, especially after losing Frank in 1993, will never be forgotten by her children. Nor will we forget the way she could conjure good behaviour with the threatening wave of a wooden spoon.
Mary Selinger was a hardworking prairie girl. She was a left-handed pitcher, a great bowler, an excellent mini stick goalie for her grandkids, an unbelievable crib and bridge player, and one of the Saskatchewan Roughriders’ most devoted fans. (Season ticket holder from 1963–2018.)
But what was truly remarkable about her was the way she elevated the skills she learned as a young girl on the farm—cooking, baking, working the land, and caregiving—into homemaking art on Harvey Street. That house with the bountiful garden where she raised seven children will forever be remembered as a place of love and connection, wonderful smells wafting from the kitchen, and music coming from the old Westinghouse stereo.
We will always remember you on 2700 Harvey, Nanny. Say hi to Poppa for us.
Our family is forever grateful to the wonderful caregivers at Autumn Care.
A Funeral Mass will be held for Mary at Holy Cross Parish, 315 Douglass Avenue East, Regina, Saskatchewan, on Monday, July 20, 2026, at 2:00 pm. on what would have been her 98th birthday. We’re sure she’ll be “happy to see you” there!
