Oswald (Ozzie) Robert Schmalenberg

September 12, 1934- April 18, 2013

After a long battle with Parkinson’s Disease, Ozzie passed away peacefully on Thursday, April 18, 2013 in the Parkside Nursing Home in Regina, at the age of 78 years. Ozzie will forever be remembered by his loving wife Alice; daughter Darcy (Andy) McFarlen; son Todd Schmalenberg (Nikki Langdon); grandchildren Adam McFarlen, Amanda McFarlen (Daniel Racette), Dean Schmalenberg, Tyler Donnelly (Jessica Charbonnau) and great grandson Mason McFarlen. Ozzie is survived by his brother Phillip (Nona) Schmalenberg; sister Emily (Ernie) Hodel; brother-in-law Al (Marie) McDonald; sisters-in-law Marion Anderson, Ev (Oscar) Heller, Jeannie McDonald; aunt Eva Hodel, as well as, many cousins, nieces, nephews, and good friends. Ozzie was predeceased by his parents, Anna and Phillip Schmalenberg; his siblings; Anne Belof, Lydia (George) Wotta, and Ella (Norman) Koch; his parents-in-law Kenneth and Nellie McDonald; brothers-in-law Walter Schmalenberg, Benno Hoyer, Charles Anderson, as well as many aunts, uncles, and cousins.

Ozzie was happily married to Alice for 50 years and they were able to celebrate their 50th wedding anniversary in June of 2012. Ozzie and Alice spent many years of running their family business and served countless customers at their gas station in Qu’Appelle Valley.

Ozzie’s friends and relatives will remember his humorous personality and hearty belly laugh. Ozzie loved music and playing his accordian. He played in various bands throughout his life. He loved barbecuing, camping, travelling, bowling, playing ping-pong, and playing crokinole with his children and grandchildren. Most of all he loved spending time with his family, especially his children and grandchildren.

A Private Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, April 27, 2013 at 1:00 p.m., with Danna Armstrong officiating. In lieu of flowers, friends wishing to make donations in Ozzie’s memory to Southey United Church Memorial Fund or Parkinson Society Canada. Interment in Southey Cemetery.
