Phomony Viravong passed away peacefully in the early morning of April 8th, 2018 at the age of 75. He is survived by his wife of 43 years, Sisouphanh; their four sons Sourivanh (Lonnie), Phonesavanh, Souksanh (Anne), Tommy; daughter Somphachanh (Bounhome Souvannavong); niece Oulayvanh (Khamfanh Chantha); nephew Amphon Phiaxay (Tanoi) and 13 grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents Don and Kom Viravong.
Phomony was born on September 2nd, 1942 in Thatponh, Savannakhet, Laos. He is the oldest of six children. He graduated from Varanasi University in India with a Masters degree in History and Political Science. After graduation, Phomony returned to Laos where he applied his Masters degree with the Ministry of Internal Affairs from 1974 to 1980. It was during that time he met his future wife, Sisouphanh. In 1975, Phomony and Sisouphanh married and started their family shortly after. In 1980, Phomony immigrated his family to Canada, including Sisouphanh’s parents, niece and nephew. Phomony was now the head of large household of 11 family members. He raised his children to always understand and demonstrate the value of hard work and respect. Phomony was also deeply religious and was a well respected Elder of the Laos Buddhist community and officiated many Buddhist and Lao traditional wedding ceremonies.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, April 13th, 2018 at 2:00 pm at the Victoria Avenue Funeral Home and Cremation Centre, 2080 Victoria Avenue E, Regina, Saskatchewan.
