She worked in a number of different nursing positions but settled in Ward C, Gynecology and General Surgery at the General Hospital in Regina, Saskatchewan, where she was the head nurse for a number of years. Due to her many years of service, she was well known and well thought of throughout the medical community. Other than nursing Phyllis was very vocal about her love of volunteering and sports. She volunteered at two Grey Cup games, four Curling Championships, and the Canada Summer Games. She was also a regular volunteer at local blood pressure clinics and for the intra-city public schools feeding program, ‘Food for Learning.’ She loved curling, cross-country skiing, swimming, and playing bridge. She was a season ticket holder for both the Saskatchewan Roughriders and the Regina Symphony Orchestra for many years and was a member of the Broadway United Church.
