It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Shirley Matus, beloved wife of Edward and mother of Shawn on Tuesday, February 27, 2018 at the age of 82. Shirley was predeceased by her parents; Albert and Alice Gwillim; siblings Carol and Lawrence Gwillim; brothers-in-law Leonard Kozakewich and Bill Yancey; and sister-in-law Irene Depatie. Shirley will always be cherished by her husband of 61 years, Edward Matus; her son Shawn; sisters Marlene Kozakewich of Regina, SK, and Terry Lynn (Neil) Matkowski of Springside, SK; sister-in-law Josephine Yancey of Winnipeg, MB; brother-in-law Arthur Depatie of Calgary, AB; and her sister Carol’s companion, Terry Hudy of Yorkton, SK; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends.
Shirley was very proud of her son, Shawn and deeply loved by her husband, Ed. She was born in Yorkton, Saskatchewan. After completing school she began working for Parker and Quine Chartered Accountants in Yorkton, SK, it was there that she met Edward Matus, and they were married in September of 1956. Shirley later worked for the Farm Credit Corp. in Yorkton for a few years. In 1966 she moved to Regina with her husband, Ed.
In 1967, Shirley and Ed welcomed into the world their son, Shawn. While Shawn was growing up, Shirley spent many relaxing summers with him at their cottage at Good Spirit Lake near Springside, SK. There, they were able to enjoy the company of Shirley’s parents, who also had a cottage at the same lake.
Shirley was employed at Regina Pioneer Village for 18 years, before retiring in 1998. She made some great friends while working there, and has kept in touch with many of them over the years.
Shirley was a member of the Northgate Walkers for many years, she made many special friends and many enjoyable memories. It gave her great pleasure to spend time with these friends at the Northgate Walkers monthly suppers, having coffee with them at the mall, and going with them on organized bus tours. She also enjoyed joining them on Saturday’s when they went out for breakfast. She was blessed to have such great friend’s. She loved to talk on the telephone with her friends and family, whom she spoke to regularly.
At Shirley’s request, there will be no formal Funeral Service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Shirley’s name may be made to the Canadian Cancer Society, 1910 McIntyre Street, Regina, SK, S4S 2R3.
Shirley loved her many great friends, work colleagues, school chums, and neighbor’s she met along the way. She will always be remembered for her strength, humor and big heart.
