Joyce Elizabeth Jones

Joyce was born in Seattle, Washington to Elizabeth Julia and Albert Jack Brattus on January 21,1945. After graduating from Renton High School in 1963, she attended nursing school at Good Samaritan Hospital in Portland, Oregon.

In her early working years, she worked in admissions at the Swedish Hospital Emergency Department, then as a medical assistant with an outpatient physician who became a close family friend. During a spontaneous Kiwanis Club trip to Reno, she met her husband Kenton, and they married almost exactly one year later at Fauntleroy Church in West Seattle.

Joyce and Ken moved to Bellevue in 1972 to start a family, welcoming son Michael in 1978. Wanting a home closer to Ken’s police job in Edmonds, they moved to Everett in 1985, welcoming daughter Courtney only three days after that move.

Joyce was a loving and devoted mother. She was interested in and attentive to her kids’ learning, hobbies, and extra-curricular activities as they grew up. She especially loved Christmas with her family, and always planned it out months ahead.

After both kids graduated, she returned to Renton. There, she volunteered for the Renton Historical Society as well as the Renton Police Department, where her father had been a police officer.

Joyce was an avid crafter throughout her life. Friends and relatives especially looked forward to her handmade cards on birthdays and holidays. She loved to garden, filling her yard with colorful blooms and sharing a bounty of harvested veggies with family in the late summers, and she loved to cook, preparing family recipes and often baking a wide variety of cookies for everyone.

Joyce was active for many years in the Corvette Marque Club of Seattle and the Sports Car Club of America with Ken, and they would frequently travel to motorsport events across the country. She had a special camaraderie with the other moms of Courtney’s ice skating team, and she was a fan of true crime, both her husband and her father being police officers.

She is survived by her husband Kenton, her children Michael and Courtney (& Ryan), her granddaughter Silja, her brother Jack (& Pat), and her brother Ron (& Solange).

A memorial will be held at Greenwood Memorial Park in Renton, Washington at 11 am on August 1st.
