

J.W. was a 1963 graduate of Oscar DePriest School in Hamlin, TX, where he was valedictorian of his class. He went on to attend Bishop College in Dallas, Texas, on a choir scholarship until he was drafted into the military. J.W. proudly served our country in the United States Army during the Vietnam War, and continued to be a proud veteran and American the remainder of his life.
Upon returning from the war, J.W. worked as a taxi driver in Dallas until becoming a machinist for Dresser Industries, from where he retired after more than 30 years of service. Following retirement, J.W. drove school buses for Richardson ISD. He enjoyed traveling around the U.S., especially to Las Vegas. He was an avid sports fan, especially of all Texas and Dallas teams; he could always be found watching a game. J.W. was a member of Mouth Pisgah Missionary Baptist Church, where he sang in the Male Chorus for many years. J.W. was a talkative man who was knowledgeable about nearly anything and everything. He enjoyed having opinionated discussions about a variety of topics with anyone who would engage in conversation. J.W. was a very organized person and very particular about many things, including how perfect his yard always looked. He was truly a family man and will be greatly missed by all who loved and knew him.
In addition to his parents, J.W. was preceded in death by his sister, Mary; and brother, Johnny. He is survived by his devoted wife, Barbara Owens of 42 years; younger brother Tommy; six children, Michael, Barbara, Alisa, Bo, Cheryl, Shannon, and one step son Ruben; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, January 11, 2022, from 5-8 p.m. at Sparkman Funeral Home, Richardson, Texas. A Graveside Service with military honors will be held on Wednesday, January 12, 2022 at 11:00 a.m. at the Dallas Fort Worth National Cemetery.
