John Michael Mason, 33, passed away on December 27, 2024, in Lubbock, Texas. He was born on March 23, 1991, in Dallas, Texas and was adopted in December of that year by his loving parents Michael and Jeannine.
John had a passion for life and loved many things. He had an affinity for all animals, especially the gentle and loving nature of dogs, cats and horses. John was fascinated with electronic gadgets, including video games, phones and computers. He loved music of all types and could nearly always be found with a pair of headphones around his neck. He took pleasure in the nostalgic experience of going to the movie theater and enjoying his popcorn and drink while watching the latest action, adventure, or sci-fi film. Despite not being able to officially drive, John had an appreciation for cars, enjoyed attending car shows and was quite skilled at driving go-carts.
John had a magnetic and gregarious personality, and whether he was attending a live music concert, WWE, or a comedy show (especially seeing his favorite comedian and ventriloquist, Jeff Dunham), he was inspired by the energy of being surrounded by others sharing in his excitement. He was a foodie and especially loved fresh seafood and Mexican food; it was not uncommon for him to tell the waitstaff, “Give my compliments to the chef!” and insist his family leave a generous tip. However, the food that was dearest to his heart were the meals lovingly prepared by his dear grandmothers, who would fix whatever he wanted at the slightest hint from him.
John found great joy surrounded by nature’s beauty and fishing from the dock. For him, it was more about the experience of catching something, whether large or small. He was happiest in the company of his family and friends, and never missed an opportunity to make new memories or go on an adventure. He loved being at his grandparents’ lake house, and especially fishing, boating, swimming and exploring with his Pawpaw Jack. He loved playing basketball, video games and going to the electronics store with his Papa Travis… who he was always able to convince to buy him something.
He proudly graduated from Notre Dame School of Dallas and went on to explore many fields during his life, including working for the Red Cross, the Texas Attorney General’s Office, Bank of America, Dean Foods, Fuzzy’s Taco Shop, the SPCA, Petite Pooch, the Dallas Jewish Community Center and Hodgetown Stadium for the Amarillo minor league baseball team, the Sod Poodles.
John lived at the Lubbock State Supported Living Center since 2019, where he received outstanding care from loving staff and made great friends with his housemates. The family is grateful to the nurses and doctors at UMC Lubbock who took such wonderful care of John during his final days.
John is predeceased by his mother, Jeannine Mulkey Mason; stepmother, Mary Mason; grandfather, Jack Mason; grandmother, Martha Mason; and grandfather, Travis Fuller.
He is survived by his father, Michael Mason; stepmother, Patricia Crawford; brothers, Jeff Mabeck, Robert Taylor, and John Taylor; sister, Christy Taylor; and grandmother, Flonnie Mulkey Fuller.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made, in honor of John, to the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society (www.lls.org).
