

Lois Madelyn (Wendel) Haynes, 86, of Dallas, Texas passed away peacefully at home on Tuesday, February 20, 2024. She will be deeply missed by her family and all who knew her. She was born in Mishawaka, Indiana on March 8, 1937, to Fred B. and Elvera (Lollman) Wendel. Lois married her sweetheart and the love of her life, Patrick J. Haynes, in South Bend, Indiana on June 3, 1961. They moved to Indianapolis, Indiana in 1965, Downers Grove, Illinois in 1987, and settled in Dallas, Texas in 1990.
She is survived by her husband of 63 years Patrick and their four sons William J. Haynes (wife Maribeth) of Columbus, Montana; Dr. Peter D. Haynes, Captain, U.S. Navy (Retired) (wife Monica) of Austin, Texas; Kevin Haynes (who has Down Syndrome) of Dallas, Texas; and Joseph P. Haynes (wife Michelle) of Denver, Colorado. She is survived by their four grandchildren—Dallan P. Haynes, Brietta M. Weston (husband Lieutenant Caleb Weston, U.S. Navy), Max E. Haynes, and Alex Haynes—and two great-grandchildren, James B. Weston and Marywinn R. Weston.
She is also survived by her sister Susie (Wendel) Cleaver of Westwood, New Jersey and scores of nephews and nieces including Christine Jack (husband Phil Blum) of Dallas; Lynn Grate of South Bend, Indiana; Jean (husband Steve) Taylor of Bethesda, Maryland; and Joan (husband Eric) Etter of Munster, Indiana. Lois was preceded in death by eleven brothers and sisters.
In 1955 Lois and Patrick graduated from St. Joseph High School in South Bend, Indiana. She graduated from the St. Vincent Hospital School of Nursing in Indianapolis, Indiana in 1958, and worked as a Registered Nurse (RN) at St. Vincent Hospital from 1975 thru 1986.
Lois was a loving wife and a caring, protective, and unselfishly devoted mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She spent countless hours volunteering at Kevin’s schools and workshops, including the Citizens Development Center (CDC)/Achieve (now U&I) in Dallas. Lois was an extraordinarily talented and productive textile artist. She found great joy in creating exquisite quilts, needlepoints, and clothing, and costumes for family and friends.
Lois was a long-time parishioner of St. Monica’s Catholic Church in Dallas, Texas, and St. Thomas Aquinas in Indianapolis, Indiana.
The Rosary will be at 10:30 AM on Monday, March 11, 2024, in St. Monica's Catholic Church, 9933 Midway Road, Dallas, Texas 75220 with a Funeral Mass of Christian Burial to follow at 11:00 AM.
