He was surrounded by family and friends.
He was born in Hastings, Nebraska on September 2, 1933 to Cletus and Evelyn Thomas and was the eldest of five siblings.
He met and married his wife, Connie in 1970 and they enjoyed 46 years together.

One of was his favorite pastimes was feeding and watching the menagerie of backyard birds, squirrels and other critters.
He loved to travel, especially to the Caribbean islands and enjoyed many trips throughout his life with family and friends.
He leaves behind his wife and caregiver Connie. His son Michael (Janet), daughters Juli (Chuck) Shelley and Jennifer. He was known as Papa and Grampee to his nine grandchildren, Dustin, Sarah, Andrew, Ellen, Emily, Bradley, Amy, Alexandra and Brady. He is survived by his brothers, Tom, Calvin, Don and sister Corky.
The family wishes to express its appreciation to Pathway Hospice and to Dr. Michael Isaac for his dedicated and compassionate care. Special thanks to his hospice nurse Kristin Shaffer. Her love and support for over two and a half years will never be forgotten.
