

Margaret L. Murphy passed away Dec 23, 2014. Preceded in death by parents Samuel D. Land and Ida Mae (Thomas) Land, husband Edwin M. Murphy, son Samuel H. McBroom, and three sisters Louise Brown, Berta Cowden, and Ethyl Wells.
Survived by children Robert V. Murphy, Patrick M. Murphy, and Zelma Day; Grandchildren Michael McBroom, Marian Schmidt, Kenneth McBroom, Christopher Key, Sue Price, Margie Haygood, Travis C. Murphy, Michelle Margaret Murphy, Sean Murphy and Kelly Murphy; & Siblings Samuel Land and Martha McEachern.
Margaret was born and raised in Chattanooga, Tennessee. Her father, Samuel, was a railroad dispatcher. Her mother, Ida, was a homemaker for five daughters and a son. Upon graduation from high school, Margaret attended secretarial school and was manager at a local bank in Chattanooga. In 1939 after a divorce from her first husband, she moved to Washington with son Samuel as a single Mother. It was in Washington she met the love of her life, Edwin, a medical corpsman training at Bethesda Navy Hospital. During World War II she became a secretary for Elliott Roosevelt and later trained to be a laboratory and X-ray technician and eventual member of the American Medical Technologists society. Margaret always had a passion for music and song and served as a pianist and organist in churches throughout her life. Most of all she was a great Mother, Grandmother, Sister and friend. She will be forever missed.
Funeral Services will be at Houston National Cemetery at 9am on Monday, Dec 29. Margaret will be buried with her husband Edwin Murphy. Son Samuel McBroom is buried in the same cemetery. Rev Harvey McReynolds will lead the service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Cancer Society or North Shore Animal League.
