Born in Pittsburg, Kansas, to the late Maynard and Marjorie Coles Angwin, Mitzi graduated from Pittsburg High School, Class of 1948. She attended Baker University, Baldwin City, Kansas, where she pledged Phi Mu Sorority. After two years, Mitzi transferred to the University of Texas, Austin, Texas, to assist the Phi Mu Chapter. As an experienced leader, she later transferred to the University of Utah to help her sorority chapter and graduated with a degree in Sociology. Mitzi recently received a 75-year membership anniversary pin.
While attending the University of Texas, Mitzi met Jim O'Hara. They were married in Pittsburg, Kansas, in 1952, beginning a 70-year love affair filled with adventure and unique companionship. During Jim's stellar career in engineering and as a professor at Tulane University in New Orleans, Mitzi was very involved in the Tulane community's activities. Exceptionally organized, she served as president of the Tulane University Women's Association and received the honor of being named a Life Member.
Mitzi's presence was marked by a quiet, gentleness that sought to serve her family and friends. After family holiday celebrations, she was most often found washing dishes in the kitchen. Her smile and laughter were sincere expressions of her love for others. An accomplished hostess, Mitzi loved to entertain with beautiful style. When Jim and Mitzi retired to San Angelo, Texas, she supported his childhood interest in the Lockheed P-38 by becoming "Rosie the Riveter” to help him build a two-seat 2/3 scale P-38 airplane. She eagerly climbed into her seat behind Jim and enjoyed many flights and fly-ins. Mitzi’s creative talents in design and needlework skills produced many beautiful items that others will cherished in her memory.
Mitzi is survived by her sister Susie Heflin (Ron) of Richardson, Texas; nephews: Rogge Heflin [Brenda] of Richardson, Texas, and Brodie Heflin [Bri], Fort Worth, Texas; nephews-in-law Ed Presler [Betty] of Lexington, Kentucky, John Presler [Marty] of Princeton, Kentucky, and Tom Presler [Millie] of Clarksville, Tennessee, and niece-in-law Frances Woodring [David] of Sturgis, Kentucky; three great nephews and one great niece as well as numerous great nephews and nieces-in-law. In addition to her parents, Mitzi is preceded in death by her husband Jim, brother Fred Angwin, stepmother Mary Deane Angwin, brother-in-law Dick E. O’Hara, sister-in-law Dorothy Presler and her husband J. H. “Bill” Presler.
