Elbert was preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Estelle Ervin; two sisters, Carole Pike and Eugenia (Gene) Parsons; a great grandson, Nicholas Mercer, and his parents Raymond and Lucile Ervin.
He is survived by three sons, Johnny Ervin, Stuart Ervin and wife Christine and Danny Ervin and wife Jackie; one Daughter, Pamela Rhodes; one sister, Ellen Merle Hinson of CO; six grandchildren, Christopher Ervin, Andrea Taylor, Wendy Mercer, Krysia Davis, Kristy Allen and Deborah McSmith; eleven great grandchildren, Sadie Davis, Zane, Aidan and Gage McSmith, Audrey, Deandra and Zachary Mercer, and Conner, Gavin, Holden and Elliana Taylor and one great great grandchild Isabella Mercer.
Elbert proudly served our country during the Korean War with the US Army Air Corp and is a veteran with the US Air Force. He retired as Captain from the Camp Lejeune Fire Department and was a former Fire Chief with the Richlands volunteer fire department. He was a long time Sunday school superintendent and Elder at Community Christian Church. He was best known as the “Candy Man” by the church members. His love of children and pocket full of candy led to many knocks on his classroom door for a hug and a sweet treat.
Funeral services will be held at 12 pm on Saturday, September 8, 2018 at Community Christian Church in Richlands. Interment will follow in the church cemetery. The family will receive friends one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests contributions be made in Elbert’s memory to Community Christian Church of Christ, 222 Richlands Loop Road, Richlands NC 28574.
