Walter Anderson Jr. was born in New Orleans Louisiana on February 10,1935 the second child of Walter Anderson and Lizzie Lewis Anderson. Walter was baptized at an early age in Tasker Memorial AME Zion church in Ponchatoula Louisiana. He attended school in Ponchatoula Louisiana and graduated from Greenville Park High school Hammond Louisiana.
An avid athlete, Walter played football in high school and was placed in all positions but excelled as Quarterback and Team Captain. Walter loved Baseball, it was said that “you could see his curve ball breaking from the center field, that no one has ever seen before”. Right after high school Walter Married Dorothy Mae Potter. Out of this union he fathered four beautiful children.
Walter played amateur baseball for the Ponchatoula Hawks before enlisting in the army. In 1955 Walter was sent to France. Walter was a member of the 2nd Army Tank Division (Hell On Wheels) and was re-stationed to Baumholder Germany where the 2nd Army Division policed the German army and practiced war games. Walter left the Army and attended Southern University in Baton Rouge Louisiana where he studied Business Administration.
Walter moved to Berkeley California, then later resided in Oakland California and settled in Richmond California. Professional sports were Walter’s past time. Walter was married to his second wife Lillian McKinney for over 20 years. He was such a passionate sports fan that he was a season ticket holder of major professional and college league teams, Oakland Athletics, Oakland Raiders, Golden State Warriors, Stanford Football and University of California Berkeley Football. For several years Walter was a coach for a San Pablo Youth Baseball team and received a few trophies including All Star Coach of the year 1981.
Walter retired from Alameda Contra Costa Transit District where he worked for 35 years. ANDY became Walter’s nickname while actively working for the Transit District and was subsequently used by all who knew and loved him. Walter owned and operated The Café, a restaurant located across the street from the Bus Division that provided a place for the Bus Drivers to eat, converse and relax between shifts.
Walter’s hobbies were playing the horses, golfing and Tennis. As an enthusiastic Horse Racing Handicapper, Walter was invited on several occasions to join the Owner in the “Winners Circle”, of which he obliged. In addition, Walter had his very own table on which his name proudly displayed in the Turf Club of Golden Gate fields race track, Berkeley CA. Although Walter’s golfing and tennis skills were minimal but he was a passionate follower of the sports.
Walter was preceded in his death by his parents Walter and Lizzie Anderson. Also preceding his death are; sister Camille Anderson Mathews; sister Carolyn Anderson Young; brother Herbert Anderson; sister Georgia Mae Anderson Shelton.
Walter Leaves to mourn his passing: third wife Audrey Mae Smith Anderson Richmond CA.; sister Brenda Anderson Patin New Orleans La.; sister Gloria Jean Anderson Spears New Orleans La.; sister Ida Mae Anderson Robinson New Orleans La.; sister Jacquelyne Anderson Jenkins Phenix City Ala.; brother Keith Anderson New Orleans La.; sister Rosalind Anderson Jackson New Orleans La.; son Ricky Anderson Oakland CA.; daughter Sandra Anderson-Knox Hayward CA.; son in law Earnest Knox Hayward CA.; daughter Terri Anderson Oakland CA.; son LaRon Anderson Lodi CA.; grandson LaVon Anderson Martinez CA.; He also leaves to mourn his passing a host of grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins, close friends, the Bryant family John, Joyce (Roberts) and Ralph and the Sanders family.
Walter spoke these words continually to his family while battling his illnesses;
“I AM GOING TO MISS YOU WHEN I AM GONE”.
