Agnes Bruce Jones, loving mother, grandmother, sister, and wife, passed away peacefully at the age of 89 in her hometown of Richmond, Virginia, on Thursday, September 6, 2012.
Born May 13, 1923 to Henry Duff Bruce and Agnes Chandler Bruce, Agnes enjoyed her childhood playing in Byrd Park and behind the Carillon; raising bantam chickens; gardening; playing the piano; going to church; playing with her cousin, Helen Barnes (Henshaw), and traveling with her family to visit relatives.
After graduating from Thomas Jefferson High School, Agnes attended Saint Claire’s Medical Secretarial School, and later worked for the State Corporation Commission Bureau of Banking, where she met and married John Spreull Jones.
Agnes’ favorite pastimes included cooking, reading, sewing, music, and being involved in her son’s (Bruce) childhood activities.
Agnes was active in the Ginter Park Women’s Club and several local women’s church groups; she taught Sunday school at Tabernacle Baptist Church. When attending Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church, she was active in the Agape class, and she played the hand bells while a church-goer at Lakeside Methodist Church.
She is preceded in death by her parents, as aforementioned; her sister, Mary Bruce Johnson and brother in-law Robert Johnson, and husband John.
She is survived by her son, Bruce Spreull Jones, and his wife, Elizabeth Taliaferro-Jones; one granddaughter, Mary Adelle Chandler Jones, all of Charlottesville; and by her nephew, Robbie Johnson, of Bumpass.
The family wishes to thank all individuals who cared for Agnes these last few years, including the caring and dedicated staff of Sunrise Assisted Living (Dogwood and Magnolia Units), who were known to trade humorous quips and listen to music with her, and the staff of Aspera Care.
Friends and family are invited to gather from 6 to 8 pm on Monday, September 10, 2012 to celebrate and remember Agnes, at the Parham Chapel, Woody Funeral Home, 1771 North Parham Road. A funeral service will be held the following day, Tuesday September 11, 2012, at 11:00am at the funeral home, followed by interment at Forest Lawn Cemetery, Richmond.
In lieu of flowers, the family encourages memorial contributions to be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, or a charity or church mission of choice.
