Betty McKinney, a woman of grace, humor, and impeccable style, passed away peacefully on September 6, 2025, at the age of 90. Born on July 18, 1935, in Washington, DC, Betty lived a full and vibrant life surrounded by family, friends, and memories that will be cherished forever. She spent most of her adult life in Arlington, VA but lived her last 17 years in Richmond, VA.
She was preceded in death by her beloved parents, Paul and Betty Guy; her husband, James DeVaine McKinney, Jr.; and her son, James DeVaine McKinney III. She is lovingly remembered by her sister, Dorothy Havener; daughters Jennifer Long (Tom) and Cynthia McKinney (Henry); eight grandchildren-James (Mac) McKinney IV, Geoffrey Drayton, Heyward Drayton, Olivia Long, Alexander Long, Hannah Drayton Lamb, Annabel Drayton, and Davis Long; and two great-grandchildren, Halle Lamb and Cooper McKinney. She also leaves behind her cherished nieces and nephew: Shelley Havener, Brett Havener, and Julie Bowyer.
Betty attended American University for two years before embarking on a professional journey that reflected her poise and personable nature. She held various positions as a receptionist with commercial real estate firms including Smithy Braden and Shannon & Luchs. But the role she was most proud of was becoming a stewardess for Eastern Airlines in 1957-a job that perfectly suited her adventurous spirit and love of travel.
Whether jet-setting across the country or preparing one of her legendary meals in her large house with its tiny kitchen, Betty approached life with flair. She was an exceptional cook who found joy in gathering loved ones around the table. Her sense of fashion was unmistakable-she had a signature style that embraced bold choices, from puffy sleeves and high heels to elegant wide-brimmed hats. She was always put together, always radiant, and always unmistakably Betty.
A Celebration of Life will be held on October 10, 2025, at 1:00 PM at Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Road, Richmond, VA 23229.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made in her memory to the American Heart Association or the American Lung Association.
