Hien Tu lost his long battle with lung cancer on Wednesday, November 9th, 2022, in the comfort of his home with his loving and loyal wife, Muoi Luu, by his side. His story began when he was born in Vietnam on June 25th, 1947. He met the love of his life at the age of 19 and had 6 children. His legacy continued as he took a huge risk to bring his family to the United States in search of a better life. In 1978, with the help of his siblings who had arrived to the United State before we did, he was able to save enough money to buy a boat. In 1979, we set sailed against great odds into the unknown with a few other families. We landed in Malaysia and then were redirected to Indonesia. Because of his bravery and relentless pursuit, we finally arrived in the United States on October of 1980.
He was the patriarch of the family. At a very young age, he helped his parents and siblings as much as he could. He ran the family business which was the only source of income to support the entire family. After having 6 children his own, he had to work even harder. He was the hardest working person you will ever meet. However, he never complained about having to work so much. In his view, there was no shame in honest work. It was as if it was a joy to him that he was able to provide.
Our dad was a consummate caretaker. He took care of anyone and everyone regardless of if you were family or not. We had uncles that we later realized were not really related to us. He cared for them as if they were his own brothers. He was kind and generous to everyone who had the pleasure in meeting him.
Our dad was a man of few words, but he didn’t need to say much. His actions spoke louder than any words ever could. There is a saying, “The greatest joy in life is to see those you love, happy!” Our dad embodied that. His work ethic and how he cared for everyone are the greatest attributes that he bestowed on all of us. To his children, he left an enduring legacy. In his memory, we hope the way he lived and loved will resonate in everything you do in life.
Our dad was preceded in death by his parents - Vinh Tu and Can Luu, his younger brother - Minh Tu, his oldest daughter - Kiet Chi Luu, his younger son - Kien Gia Luu and his grandson - Franky Hazelgrove. He is survived by his loving wife, Muoi Luu. He is also survived by his:
