Hyung Mo Lee

LEE, Dr. Hyung Mo, known as "H.M.," 86, of Richmond, passed away at his home on Sunday, March 24, 2013. He was recognized internationally as a pioneer in organ transplantation and appreciated for his patience, kindness, and humor, as well as his integrity and dedication, by his family, friends, colleagues, and patients. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, April 6, 2013, at St. Stephen's Church, 6000 Grove Ave., Richmond, Va. 23226. Rev. Louise Blanchard and Rev. Megan Limburg will be the officiants. The funeral will be private, with arrangements by Woody Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the MCV Foundation, P.O. Box 980234, Richmond, Va. 23298-0324, for the Dr. H.M. Lee Memorial Fund. Dr. Lee was born in Korea, where he received his bachelor's degree from Keijo Imperial University in 1945 and his M.D. from the Medical School of Seoul National University (the renamed successor to Keijo Imperial) in 1949. In the 1950s, he came to the United States, where he completed his residency and joined the clinical surgical faculty and transplant team at the Medical College of Virginia under the leadership and guidance of Dr. David Hume, his mentor. Dr. Lee was a Professor and former Chair of the Division of Vascular and Transplant Surgery at the Medical College of Virginia, now the Virginia Commonwealth University School of Medicine, and was also a past president of the American Society of Transplant Surgeons. Upon his retirement, he attended T.C. Williams School of Law at the University of Richmond where he became its oldest law graduate ever. Dr. Lee met and married Dr. Kyung Lee, his wife of 54 years, in Richmond, where they raised their two children. In addition to his wife, he is survived by their children, Mikyung Lee and her husband, Wayne Morrison, Dr. Bennett Lee and his wife, Eun Lee; and three grandchildren.
