

Laura Lucas, 87, was born May 14, 1925 to Professor James B. Lucas and Frangie D. Lucas, in Blacksburg, Va. She departed life, confident in her faith, on October 9, 2012 looking forward to "sitting on that cloud" with her life partner. She was predeceased by her husband, Charles Henry Garrette Jr. and her sisters, Fay Lucas Joerg, Gray Lucas Pyle and Frangie Lucas Spangler. Laura's father was a professor of Organic Chemistry at Virginia Polytechnic Institute; her mother earned her degree at Randolph Macon Woman's College. Laura and her husband, Charlie both earned their degrees from Virginia Polytechnic Institute. Laura is survived by five children, Charles Burleigh Garrette and wife, Charlotte, Michael Wade Garrette and wife, Kristine, Stuart Alan Garrette and wife, Joan, Carla Garrette and partner, Patricia, and Cathy Garrette Loving. She is also survived by seven grandchildren, Samantha, Wade, Golden, Jason and Jessica, Ashley and Allison; and three great-grandchildren. Laura was a certified gemologist and licensed jeweler. She devoted her life to serving her church in almost every leadership role possible, spending countless hours living her faith. She was truly a living role model for her children and everyone who crossed her path. A memorial service to honor her life will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday, October 20, 2012 at Ginter Park United Methodist Church.
