Louis Jacob Schiavo, III died peacefully in his sleep on December 27, 2020 following a dignified battle with brain cancer. He died at his home in Henrico, VA with his wife of 51 years, Nadine (Tasca) Schiavo, at his side. Louis was born in San Antonio, TX on June 3, 1943 to the late Louis J. Schiavo Jr. and Lela Mae Schiavo. He graduated from Kaiserslautern American High School in Germany and Trinity University in San Antonio, then earned master’s degrees from The University of Pennsylvania and American University. Lou was an officer in the U.S. Navy, served courageously in Vietnam and later the US Navy Reserve, and retired as Commander in 1989. Lou met Nadine in the Officers’ Club at the Philadelphia Naval Shipyard on February 19, 1969. They returned to that Officers’ Club on October 4th of the same year for their wedding reception. After retiring from the Navy, Lou became an educator to many; he led training courses in sales consulting within the Ernst & Young national office in Reston, VA and later taught English as a second language to students at Osborne High School in Manassas, VA. Lou loved to read, watch the news, birdwatch, and be on the water. He was never without his binoculars. Lou is survived by his wife, Nadine; his daughter Valerie and her husband Wes Keating, Richmond, VA; his son Matthew and his wife Catherine, Tokyo Japan; his son Dante and his wife Kathryn, Rochester, MN; his brothers Stephen (Pam) Schiavo, Waynesville, NC and Vincent (Karen) Schiavo, Truckee, CA; his sister Mimi (Pat) Sullivan, Londonderry, NH; and his grandchildren Annie, Jack, Michael, Oliver, and Miles. He is further survived by many nieces, nephews, and friends. CDR Schiavo is interred at Arlington National Cemetery. The family requests that gifts in Lou’s memory be designated for cancer research at Mayo Clinic.
