Lowell Thomas Butt

Lowell T. Butt, 89, of Richmond, formerly of Waverly, VA, passed away on Saturday, October 2. Born on November 11, 1931 in Raton, New Mexico, Lowell was the son of the late William Francis and Hazel Woodruff Butt. Lowell was a U.S. Navy Veteran that served on the USS Braine from 1950-1954 and received National Defense Service and Navy Good Conduct Medals. He graduated from Virginia Polytechnic Institute with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering Mechanics in 1958. Later in 1973, he earned his Master of Science in Applied Mechanics from the University of Virginia. A retired Design Professional, Lowell worked as a Mechanical Engineer for Norfolk Naval Shipyard and an Engineering Consultant for Weidlinger Associates, Inc. Lowell was an avid archer, outdoorsman, and long-time member of the South Hampton Bowman’s Club. He was an inventor, talented wood worker, and loved hunting, fishing, playing golf, and watching movies. He really enjoyed traveling, especially out West and back to his beloved-New Mexico where cousins and extended family still live today. Lowell was predeceased by brother James Keith (Goldie), sister Betty L. Butt Westbrook (Irving), sister Diane Marie/Sister Francis Bernard I.H.M., and brother William Carroll. He is survived by Betty’s daughter Kathy B. Parsons, (David), Alice Butt (William), their kids Debbie Ayres (Tony- kids Steve and Brian), W.C. (kids William, Adam, and Michelle), Mike, (daughter Kendall), Cindy Dearing (Lee- kids Randy and Ashlee), and Mark (son Kevin), brother Robert F. (Eunice), Robert’s kids of first wife Margie, Diane McConathy- (daughter Lindsay) and Bobby (Rachel), and brother Donald B. (Peggy), their kids Marty (kids Zack and Blake), Kristi Butt, and Kevin (Wendy- kids Anna and Kelly). Lowell was predeceased by grandnephew Michael (Diane McConathy’s son). Lowell was predeceased by his wife, Barbara. He is survived by her children Patricia, Bobby, Lisa, and Keith and numerous grandchildren to include kids of Donna Edwards- James K. Edwards, (Jennifer- son Noah Thomas), Tabatha Cheney (Daniel- kids Owen and Johnnnie), Christopher Edwards (Arley- kids Abbiegayle, Lily, and Chloe). He is also survived by his first wife, Alice and their ten children TJ Larz, Theresa A. Baga, Cary T. Butt (son Chris), Clare L. O’Shaughnessy (Brian- kids Yvonne and Lindsay), Mary E. Albert (John- kids John W. and Jason), Ruth A. Jones (David- kids Brad, Ben, and Michael Wilson (Sara- son Ryan Thomas), C. Benjamin Butt (Kelly O’Gara- kids Brooke and Kayla), A. Conrad Fahrer (Jenna), Joseph B. Love (Gracia), and Adrian B. Butt (Pamela Garcia). Lowell was predeceased by grandson Ryan Taylor Wilson (Ruth’s son from previous marriage).
