

She was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, S. Harold Copeland. She is survived by her sons, Edward Copeland of Mount Dora, Florida, David Copeland (Jeri) of Oilville, and Paul Copeland (Ellen) of Warsaw; grandchildren, Elizabeth Copeland of Walkerton, Sarah Wind (Trevor) of Richmond, Christopher Copeland of Richmond, and Jennifer Smith (Joshua) of Oilville; great grandchildren, Gwathmey, Elliott, Taylor, and Riley Wind, and Asher Smith; loyal and loving caregivers, Donna Asbury and Kim Johnson; and other close family members and friends. Mary Lou was also preceded in death by grandsons, Conner “Connerman” Copeland, and Jake Copeland.
Known to her grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and many others as Grammy, she loved being Mom/Momma to her three boys. Mary Lou was born in Salem, Ohio and arrived in Virginia in 1949 to attend Blackstone College for Girls. She quickly settled into college life where she excelled and was elected President of her Class. She transferred in 1951 to attend RPI, now known as Virginia Commonwealth University. This is where she met Harold and following their graduation in 1953, they were married in Salem, Ohio. Together they enjoyed boating and spending time at their river home in Urbanna.
Over many years, Mary Lou served as the administrative secretary for River Road Baptist, Greek Orthodox, and Second Presbyterian Churches.
A graveside service and interment will be at Westhampton Memorial Park on Thursday at noon.
