Obituary of Miriam Hazlewood James
Miriam Madeleine Hazlewood James, a resident of Parkside, Beth Sholom, passed away peacefully on August 17, 2022 at the age of 101. She was born on April 17, 1921, in Richmond, Va., to the late Douglas H. Hazlewood and Rosa Lee Hazlewood. Miriam was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 44 years, Henderson T. James; and sister, Virginia Lee Snellings. She is survived by her two children, son Randall H. James and wife Virginia; daughter, Susan Lee J. Carson and husband B.R.; grandchildren, Lee J. Tanner and husband Neil; John D. James; Joanna Lee Hedvall and husband Ed; Brec Carson and wife Emily; and great grandchildren, William Tanner, James Tanner, Andrew Tanner, Hannah James, Spencer James, Annabeth Hedvall, Clara Carson, Jack Carson, and Meghan Carson. She attended Mary Washington College and then worked at C&O Railroad until her marriage in 1944. A long time member of Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church, she taught Sunday School for many years, served on various committees, and was a member of the Women’s Missionary Circles. Active in her children’s schooling, she served as room mother for several years. Later she worked at Travelers Insurance during the 70’s and 80’s. Once retired, she volunteered, along with her sister, at the Sheltering Arms Hospital (1988 - 89). An avid reader, she also enjoyed playing in a canasta club, duckpin bowling on the Pinnettes team, and walking in Regency Mall (twice a week) with friends. She enjoyed traveling. Several highlights included a trip to Europe with her granddaughters and daughter-in-law; a western road-trip with her daughter’s family, plus numerous beach vacations with her family and sightseeing trips with friends. Most of all she enjoyed spending time with her family including hosting decades of Thanksgiving meals. Most recently, the family came together from all over the nation to celebrate her 101st birthday. The family would like to recognise the staff at St. Mary’s Woods and Beth Sholom Parkside for the care and attention given to Miriam during her final years. A graveside service will be held at Riverview Cemetery on Saturday, September 3, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, please make a donation to Hatcher Memorial Baptist Church, 2300 Dumbarton Road, Richmond , VA 23238; or a charity of your choice.
