“Nana,” as she was affectionately known to most everyone, chose to live independently until the end of her time here on earth, even managing her own finances, medications, and meals. She loved to talk and share stories with friends, family, and so-called strangers alike. She also loved to read and loved to quilt, even handcrafting one of her famous quilts for each of her grandchildren, which have now of course become even more special. For many years, she and her late husband, Jesse “JW” Porter were deacon and deaconess of Monument Heights Baptist Church, where she loved teaching Sunday School. Now after more than four decades since her late husband’s passing, she and JW are together again.
She is survived by her daughter, Leigh Neale (husband Wayne) and son, Martin Porter (wife Sara), four grandchildren: David Neale (wife Sharon), Lori Franco (husband Jimmy), and Saree and Ashton Porter, as well as two great grandchildren: Savannah and Luke Neale. She was the oldest of five children of Elijah and Sarah Brown. Her sister, Alice Carter and brother, Billy Brown preceded her in death. She was very close to her surviving sisters, Martha Nash and Bernice Bailey. She also had many nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews. She instilled in everyone the importance of faith, prayer, love, and family. We will miss her presence here on earth but rejoice knowing that she is now in the Kingdom of Heaven and we will one day see Nana again.
The family will greet friends on Saturday, January 6, 2024 from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N. Parham Road, Henrico, VA 23229 where a service will immediately follow at 11 a.m. Interment will be in Westhampton Memorial Park.
