Obituary of Sheryl Haynes Vaughan
Sheryl Haynes Vaughan, 52 years old, passed away peacefully at her country home in Rockville, Virginia on October 3, 2020 after a long, courageous battle with Fallopian Tube Cancer. Sheryl was born on November 24, 1967 in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Sheryl was a devoted elementary school teacher for 27 years. She started her teaching career in Newport News, Virginia at Riverside Elementary School. After teaching at Riverside for 8 years, Sheryl, her husband, Bev, and daughter, Alex, moved to Glen Allen, Virginia where she continued her teaching career at Twin Hickory Elementary. Throughout the 18 years she taught at Twin Hickory, she created a legacy for herself and made an impact on everyone who was lucky enough to cross her path. She was deeply devoted to her students whom she called her "beach bunnies," named for her love of the beach. She was named Teacher of the Year and was nominated as a Finalist for R.E.B. Awards for Teaching Excellence twice. Additionally, she was featured on Henrico County's #HeartofHenrico weekly spotlight for her positivity and dedication to her students. Even after being diagnosed with Stage 4 Fallopian Tube Cancer in 2016, she never let the devastating news impact her incredible gift of teaching or dull her radiant and positive personality. For her final year of teaching, she was an Educational Assistant for Physical Education at Rivers Edge Elementary School. Sheryl enjoyed spending time with friends and family at Virginia Beach, the Chesapeake Bay and Key West and would travel there as often as she could. Her family and friends were of utmost importance to her. She always made time to attend her students’ various soccer games, gymnastics meets, and other extracurricular activities. Sheryl made everyone she met feel loved and important in the world. Sheryl is survived by her husband, Randall Beverley Vaughan III, her daughter, Alexandra Nicole Vaughan, her brother, Stephen Edward Haynes and her dachshund, Coral Reef Vaughan. She was predeceased by her parents Catherine Geer Haynes and Richard Steve Haynes. In lieu of flowers, please consider donating to the American Cancer Society. A Celebration of Life Event will be held at a later date in Spring 2021.
