He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Lynn; two sons, Thomas R. McDaniel, Jr. (Laurie) of Kernersville, NC and Michael J. McDaniel (Cherie Wall) of Powhatan, VA; one grandson, Nicholas R. McDaniel of Denver, CO; and a host of other family members and friends.
He was born and raised in Richmond, the youngest of eight children of Ernest Linwood McDaniel and Thelma Vaughan McDaniel, all of whom predeceased him.
He graduated from John Marshall High School in 1957, and then served in the U. S. Navy for three years where he was assigned to the USS Thomas J. Gary destroyer. Following his Navy service, he returned to his hometown to live.
He enjoyed a long career in the printing industry, beginning at the Richmond Times Dispatch and News Leader, followed by more than 35 years at William Byrd Press which later became Cadmus.
Blessed with a great memory and a gift for storytelling, he would entertain everyone he met with his stories of growing up in the Oregon Hill area of Richmond, delivering newspapers as a young boy, serving on a Navy destroyer, coaching Little League, fishing with his sons on the Pamunkey River, pulling pranks on coworkers, and so much more.
After retiring, Mac enjoyed vacations with Lynn, especially cruising the Caribbean and trips to Las Vegas and Myrtle Beach or the Outer Banks.
The family would like to thank the Affinity Hospice Care team for their care and comfort during his last days.
A memorial service will be held at 11 AM on December 10, 2024, at Woody Funeral Home Parham, with visitation one hour prior. Burial at Greenwood Memorial Gardens.
