
MATTHEWS, Wilfred Richard "Dick," of Richmond, Virginia, retired branch Manager for James McGraw Inc., departed this life on Sunday, October 23, 2011 after a courageous battle with Alzheimers. Born on March 23, 1926, he was preceeded in death by his grandparents, Florrie Harris Carter and Willie Richard Carter; and by his parents, Evelyn Carter Matthews Duke and Wilfred Arnold Matthews. He was a loving and devoted husband of 65 years to his High School sweetheart, whom he cherished most in this world, Evelyn Mancino Matthews. He was also a devoted father to his children, Diane Jackson (Reid Gilley), Susan Fischer, Rich Matthews (Sarah), and Rob Matthews (Pam); and loving grandfather to, Michael, Brett, Kirk, Kyle, Gwen and Gabby. He had one great-granddaughter, Hannah; and was a brother to Willie C. Duke (Violet), and Evelyn "Tinky" Berge (Norman). He was an Air Force veteran of World War II, and he started the first Volunteer Fire Department in Glenwood Farms, Richmond. He was an active member for many years at Cavalry Baptist Church where he was a deacon and Sunday school teacher. He enjoyed golf, bowling, going to the river and card nights, but his biggest passion was his family. He will be mourned and missed...and always remembered. He was a great man! The family requests that in lieu of flowers, remembrances be made by donations to the Alzheimer's Association of Greater Richmond, 4600 Cox Rd., Suite 130, Glen Allen, Va. 23060. Family will receive friends on Wednesday, October 26, from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m., and the service will be held on Thursday, October 27 at 11 a.m. at Woody's Funeral home on N. Parham Rd. The family would also like to extend its deepest appreciation to the AseraCare Hospice Group and the staff of Sunrise at Bon Air.
