William "Bill" Todd Guthrow went to be with the Lord on April 9th, 2026. He was laid to rest during a family graveside service at Westhampton Memorial Gardens in Henrico County on April 18th. This was followed with a celebration of life at the West End home of he and Betty, his wife of 65 years.
Much beloved for his focus on family, education and quiet charity, the lifelong Richmond resident enjoyed a 28-year career with the Richmond, Fredericksburg and Potomac Railroad (now CSX Railways). He was named Director of Information Services for the company in 1976.
Bill was born in 1938 and grew up in Richmond’s vibrant Lakeside section. He was a 1957 graduate of Hermitage High School (current site of Moody Middle School).
Following military service with U.S. Army Intelligence in Italy, he earned an accounting degree from Richmond Professional Institute (now Virginia Commonwealth University) and worked in public accounting for several years before joining the RF&P team.
Bill met wife Betty, originally from Narrows, VA, when she was residing with relatives in Lakeside and married her upon return from his service in the military. Bill and Betty’s marriage of 65 years is a testament to the love and devotion they shared.
He was a long-time member of Bethlehem Baptist Church in Henrico County where he and Betty have been active members. Bill was an integral part of the congregation, often helping with financial auditing, and supporting numerous church missions and community outreach efforts.
William possessed a passion for pleasure boating …. captaining several cruisers throughout his life and spending many a weekend with family and friends exploring and fishing the Rappahannock River and Chesapeake Bay.
During his youth, he enjoyed playing baseball and even worked the scoreboard for the Richmond team at Mooers Field in the 1950s. Over the decades, he was a tremendous supporter of RVA’s minor-league teams …. from Colts and Virginians to Braves and Flying Squirrels. He passed on that love of the game to his sons.
William has set an example for the loved ones he leaves behind, including his wife Betty, his sons Steve (Tina) and Scott (Pam); grandchildren Becky, Daniel (Heather), Perry (Sheyanne), Linda (Silas), Jennie (Erik) and Olivia (Tzachi), and Justin; great grandchildren Riley, Lily, Daniel, Oaklee, Millie, Ivy and Maizie; beloved cousins Claire and Bitsy; nephew Norwood; in-laws Robert, Brenda and Debbie; and many other loved ones and lifelong friends.
