

Yvonne H. Flynn (née Harris), age 86, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by her loved ones on April 17, 2025, in Glen Allen, Virginia. A devoted follower of Christ, a trailblazing professional, and a cherished wife, mother, sister, and friend, Yvonne’s life was marked by unwavering faith, intellectual curiosity, and a deep love for those around her. She left her loving mark on all she met.
Born on March 6, 1939, in Bessemer, Alabama, Yvonne was the fifth of seven children of James Harris Sr. and Willella McGhee Harris. She graduated as class valedictorian from Wenonah High School in Birmingham in 1957 and went on to earn a degree in Chemistry from Talladega College in 1961. Her pursuit of education continued with a degree in Accounting from the University of Central Florida in 1977 and a Master’s Degree in Taxation from the Washington School of Law in 1996, graduating Summa Cum Laude. In 1993, she became an Enrolled Agent.
Yvonne’s professional journey was both diverse and distinguished. She began her career with the U.S. Postal Service in Chicago before working as a chemist with the U.S. Department of Agriculture and the Environmental Protection Agency’s Water Division. Later, she served as an environmental chemist for the State of Indiana and transitioned into accounting as a Supervisory Accountant at GTE/Verizon. In 1975, Yvonne became an entrepreneur and opened the Yvonne H. Flynn Tax and Accounting Service with clients from multiple states over the years.
Her Christian faith was the cornerstone of her life. Baptized at Roosevelt City Church of Christ in Bessemer, she remained an active member throughout her life—teaching Vacation Bible School, Bible Correspondence Courses, and attending numerous youth activities, Ladies Days and gospel meetings in multiple states.
In August 1969, while on vacation with her friend Betty in Jamaica, she met and fell in love with Ivan L. Flynn. Six weeks later, on October 8, 1969, in Ocho Rios, Jamaica they sealed their love in holy matrimony with family and friends as witnesses. Yvonne and Ivan have enjoyed a blissful 55-year marriage packed with fun adventures, life's challenges, and eternal devotion.
Yvonne is survived by her beloved husband Ivan; daughters Pamela and Patricia; stepdaughters Marlene Flynn and Hazel Rhule; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; sisters Prima Parker (Calvin) and Doris Pope; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. She was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Clotelia Lindsey, James Jr., Nathan, and McClenton Harris.
A viewing will be held on Friday, April 25, 2025, from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at Woody Funeral Home, 1771 N Parham Rd, Richmond, VA 23229. A Celebration of Life funeral service will follow on Saturday, April 26, 2025, at 10:30 AM at Three Chopt Road Church of Christ, 9500 Three Chopt Rd, Richmond, VA 23229.
