Dorothy Elizabeth Talbert Shamburger of Madison, MS went to be with her husband Gordon in their heavenly home on May 13, 2020, at the age of 91. Dorothy was born in Meridian, MS, on March 2, 1929, to the late Kimbrell Green Talbert and Elizabeth Covington Talbert. She graduated with honors from Meridian Senior High School in 1946, received her Bachelor’s Degree, cum laude, from Mississippi College along with her husband Gordon, and attended Baptist Theological Seminary in New Orleans, LA. She received her Masters’ Degree from Mississippi College in 1973 and was an English instructor for 30 years.
Dot assisted her husband in serving the Lord, first in his pastorates and later in his ministry as Chaplain at Mississippi Baptist Medical Center. They were members at Calvary Baptist Church in Jackson for over fifty years where Dot served as WMU Director, GA Director, Sunday school teacher, Training Union leader, and visitor for the Homebound Department. She also enjoyed singing in the choir.
Dot was loved by her students, friends and family. She was an avid reader, an accomplished pianist, and a wonderful cook, and she was fond of gardening and traveling. She and her devoted husband served as Southern Baptist missionaries in Alaska and Brazil. They enjoyed traveling to more than twenty countries of the world and to a large part of the USA, including one of her favorites, Hawaii, and they also enjoyed traveling on several cruises throughout the world.
Dot is survived by her son Gaines of Clinton, MS, her daughter Trish Melech and grandson Parker Melech (Katie), of Tampa, FL, two grand-daughters, Dr. Susan Shamburger (Clint Smith) and Dr. Amye Shamburger (Chad Alexander), and seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her grandson Jimmy Shamburger. The family wishes to express their appreciation to the staff at St. Catherine’s Village for their diligent and loving care and devotion to Dorothy during her stay at the Village.
In order to keep our friends safe and healthy during the pandemic, we are having a private graveside ceremony for family on Saturday.
