
Elizabeth Anderson Gilbert, 96, passed away on Saturday, January 13, 2018, at UMMC Hospital with her three children by her side. She was a beloved wife, mother, sister, aunt, grandmother, and great grandmother. She was born to Kate and Henry Price Anderson, Sr. in Helena, AR. There she met her late husband, Tommy Gilbert, while working at Pekin Wood Products in the 1940’s after two years of study at Hendrix College in Conway, AR. After they married in Detroit, MI in 1946 and lived in Louisville, KY, they made their permanent home in Jackson, MS in the late 1940’s. Elizabeth and Tommy joined Alta Woods United Methodist Church in the early 1950’s, and Elizabeth had been a faithful member of Alta Woods until her passing.
During her years in Jackson, Elizabeth was actively engaged in a number of activities, including numerous bridge clubs, a local garden club, and the PTA. She was active in her church and community, participating in Alta Woods Bible studies and serving as a Hinds General Hospital Volunteer for many years. She was physically active her whole life. She, Tommy, and the kids enjoyed boating and fishing on the reservoir in the early years. Later in life, Elizabeth became an avid golfer, having been a member of Shady Oaks Country Club and then Bay Point Golf Club. Among her favorite pastimes were watching sports and cheering on the Mississippi State Bulldogs.
She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband Tommy, her sisters (Kate, June, May), and her brother Henry. She is survived by her son Jeff; son Jerry (Leigh); daughter Jill Massey (Boyd); granddaughters Jenny Whitlock, Morgan Sellers (Katie), Sallie Gilbert, and Caroline Gilbert; grandson Peter (Katherine); great granddaughter Eliza Gilbert; and numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces, and great nephews.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, January 17, at 1:00 p.m. at Parkway Funeral Home in Ridgeland, MS. Visitation will precede the service and will be from 11:00 a.m. through 12:30 p.m. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that gifts be made to Alta Woods United Methodist Church of Jackson, MS.
