Frances Rose Cox, who moved to Madison, Mississippi at the age of four, was the daughter of Roy Byrd Price and Letha Hodges Price. She graduated from Madison–Ridgeland High School and Millsaps College in Jackson, Mississippi, where she was a member of Kappa Delta Sorority.
An active member of the Madison United Methodist Church for over 75 years, she served as its Pianist and Organist/Choir Director for a 30 year period. Subsequently, she served as Organist/Choir Director at Jackson Mississippi’s Briarwood United Methodist Church for 12 years. As a leader in the United Methodist Women, she served as Local and Sub–District President, District Vice–President and Conference Communications Coordinator. Additionally, in 1950 she served as Alderwoman on the historic All–Woman–Governing Town Board of Madison, Mississippi.
She taught Choral Music and Piano at Madison–Ridgeland High School, Madison Elementary School, Ridgeland Elementary School and Rosa Scott Middle School for 29 years where she was recognized for her award–winning Ensemble Singers; for original works composed for annual Christmas programs; for inspiring both elementary and high school students to love music; and for serving as State Chairperson for the Mississippi High School Choral Division.
After retiring, she opened a British antique store in Madison, and developed the Price– Cox Commercial Complex on Madison’s historic Main Street. She was active in the Annandale Chapter DAR, serving as its Regent and Organizing Chair of the South Madison County DAR Tour of Homes; and Mississippi’s Old Trace Questers’ Antique Club, serving as its President. After moving to Kansas City in 2001, she was active in the United Methodist Women; the ABC Sunday School Class at The Church of the Resurrection; the Shawnee Mission Chapter DAR; and the FN Chapter of the P.E.O.
She was married 55 years to L. H. Cox, Jr., a former Mayor of Madison whose pioneer family settle in Madison in the early 1860s. He died in 2001 shortly after he and Frances Rose moved to Kansas City. She is survived by daughter Charlotte Dale Cox Morrow and son–in–law John H. Morrow, III of Overland Park, Kansas; and son, Llewellyn Henry Cox, III and son–in–law Michael D. Kunkel of Southampton, New York; plus four grandchildren: Stephanie Morrow Mowe, Meredith Morrow Illa, Cassie Morrow Banka and John Morrow, IV; nine great grandchildren; 2 great-great grandchildren; a brother, Roy Byrd Price, Jr. and
sister–in–law Barbara Price of Mobile, Alabama; and many nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life service will be 3:00pm Saturday December 29, 2018 at Madison United Methodist Church, Madison, MS
