

Surviving family members include his siblings; Harry, Max, and Roy Garretson, and Mary Myers, his children; Beckye Yarborough, Roland (Sandra), and Grace Shumaker (Tim). He was affectionately known as Poly to his nine grandchildren; Victoria Smith (Craig), Kathleen Lyons, Garret Shumaker (Kristen), Tracie Grace Riesgo (Brandon), Grace Anne Garretson, Daniel Lyons (Jordee), Carrie Wynn (Chase), Marjorie Lewis (Drew), and Keith Shumaker (Lauren). He leaves behind 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife Bobbye Harris and his brothers Gordon and Rounsa Garretson.
Roland was born and reared in Leakesville, MS, the third of seven children. He never tired of keeping up with the news from his hometown. He loved sports, from high school football to coaching Little League baseball, and was an ever-faithful MSU fan. He went to college at MSU where he met his wife and graduated as a civil engineer. He served in the US Air Force, attaining the rank of First Lieutenant. He was active in Trinity Presbyterian Church, where he served as an elder for many years. He was devoted to his wife and family. He is remembered for his integrity, friendliness and ready smile.
The family extends special recognition and thanks to Covenant Caregivers who truly took care of him as family. Visitation will be held May 15, 2026 at 1:00, with service following at 2:00 p.m. at Parkway Funeral Home 1161 Highland Colony Parkway Ridgeland, MS 39157.
