

Mr. Ellis was a Carthage, Mississippi native and long time Jackson resident. He attended Mississippi State University and was a graduate of the Southwestern Graduate School of Banking at Southern Methodist University in Dallas. He retired from Deposit Guaranty National Bank after 44 years in 1984. After retirement, he also worked as a real estate broker.
He served in the Navy during World War II in the South Pacific on board the USS Electra and the amphibious operating base in Pearl Harbor. Truman turned his experiences into a book entitled Engebi: Three Years, Six Months, One Day.
He was a member, former president and director of the Fondren Civitan Club. He was a member of the Colonial Country Club, the Colonial Country Club Super Coot Golfers and Jackson Senior Golf Association, serving as a past president.
Truman loved to travel with his wife and family all year round, enjoying many happy trips with his wife of 64 years, Doris (Dot); brother, Cecil; sister-in-law, Irene; and the Good Sam Club. Throughout the years, Truman and Dot took numerous world tours to countries such as Egypt, Russia, and throughout Europe. Each year, he made sure the whole Ellis family enjoyed Ellis Beach Week together at a beach house in Gulf Shores, AL for the past 25 years.
He was a charter member of Broadmeadow United Methodist Church, a Sunday School teacher, past president of the official board, and chairman of various committees.
Services are 11 a.m., Friday, April 1, 2011 at Broadmeadow United Methodist Church in Jackson with burial in Wright and Ferguson Parkway Memorial Cemetery. Visitation is 5-7 p.m., Thursday, March 31, at Wright and Ferguson Funeral Home in Ridgeland and 10 a.m. at Broadmeadow UMC.
Survivors include wife, Doris; three daughters, Linda Ellis Voda (Joseph) of Arlington, TN; Jan Ellis Norwood (Tommy) of Madison; Amy Ellis McNeil (Ed) of Madison; grandchildren, Whitney Voda Rhodes (Cameron) of Cantonment, FL; Lindsay Voda Middleton (Patrick) of Medina, TN; Bryan Ellis Norwood (Ashley) of Boston, MA; Cary Norwood Merkosky (David) of Gastonia, NC; Sophie McNeil of Jackson; Mary Grace McNeil of Ridgeland; Ivy Rose McNeil of Madison; and four great-grandchildren, Jacob and Parker Middleton of Medina, TN; and Andrew and Liam Rhodes of Cantonment, FL.
