Virginia Gillespie Brock

Visitation will be held from 5:00 PM until 7:00 PM on Thursday, August 11, 2022, at Parkway Funeral Home in Ridgeland, MS.

Memorial services will be held at 11:00 AM on Friday, August 12 at Covenant Presbyterian Church in Jackson, MS, preceded by visitation at 10:00 AM. Graveside service will follow at Lakewood Memorial Park.

Virginia was born July 5, 1928, in Jackson, Mississippi, the daughter of Dr. and Mrs. Guy T. Gillespie.

Following graduation from Central High School, she attended Belhaven College where she received her Bachelors degree and the University of Mississippi where she received her Masters degree. She married George Brock of Memphis, Tennessee in 1954.

Virginia was active in, and a long-time member of, the One O’Clock Club, Matrons Club, and International Friends in Jackson. She and her husband George were charter members of Covenant Presbyterian Church where she enjoyed singing in the choir, helping with Sunday service flower arrangements, and traveling to South America on mission trips. Over her career, Virginia worked for The Clarion-Ledger, Natchez Public School System, Trustmark Bank, and from 1983 until her retirement in 1998, the Mississippi Department of Archives and History where she was Executive Assistant to the Director. She and her husband enjoyed volunteering for international exhibits at the Mississippi Arts Pavillion and travelling to Europe to visit the origins of those exhibits. They also enjoyed cruising on steamboat excursions and visiting antebellum homes all along the Mississippi River. Her love of art, particularly watercolor, as well as music, and flowers were life-long passions which she joyfully shared with others.

Virginia was preceded in death by her husband of 60 years, George Lee Brock. She is survived by her three children, Lillian Hedges of Memphis, TN, Miller Brock of Huntsville, AL, and Tyler Brock of Oxford, MS. She is also survived by nine grandchildren, and seven great grandchildren.
