

Riverside, CA. – Helen Marie Adrian Hanson, 84, passed away at home on March 18, 2014 the day before her 85th birthday. Mom was born March 19, 1929 at Clearfield, SD to Elizabeth “Bess” Angel and Earl Adrian. She was raised on the Adrian Ranch in Mellette County, SD. Helen graduated from high school at St. Mary's Academy in O'Neill, NE 1946. After graduation she attended a teachers college in the Black Hills of South Dakota at which time she met her husband, Harold C. Hanson Jr. They were married August 3rd, 1948 in Lead, SD. The family moved to Redondo Beach, CA in 1964 where she became involved in the care and breeding of birds. She was a founding member of the South Bay Bird Club, Secretary for American Federation of Aviculture (AFA), and membership secretary for Aviculture Society of America. She became an advocate in the advancement of knowledge and respect for the breeding of birds, predominately parrots. Mom enjoyed traveling and attending the annual bird convention in various cities throughout the US hosted by the AFA. She was also involved in the Boy Scouts where she ran a uniform exchange for needy children, including patching, hemming and alterations. She was very creative and enjoyed sewing, painting, crochet, needlepoint, quilting and gardening. Being an avid reader, she took great pride in collecting books and donating them to the library in White River, SD. Helen is survived by her brothers: Dean (Joan), Baton Rouge, LA; Dick (Ruth), North Vernon, IN; Bill (Donna), White River, SD; children: Carol (Ron) Ingelido, Valencia, CA; Clay (Tonja) Kamas, UT; Bruce, Lakewood, CA; Clifford (Olivia) Tucson, AZ; Michael (Lori) Albuquerque, NM; Betsy Morrison, Hawthorne, CA; Kent, Riverside, CA.; she had 11 grandchildren and four great-grand children. Preceded in death by her husband of 59 years Harold; daughters Laura Hanson and Bonnie Jackson Milam; brother Bob (Pat) Adrian. Services will be held at St. Catherine of Alexandria Catholic Church, Riverside, CA. Friday, April 11th. Visitation from11:30 am to 12:00 pm; Memorial Mass at noon. Internment and grave side services will be Monday, May 5, 2014, 1:00 pm at the cemetery in Winner, SD.
