Jan Urquhart Stanfield passed away in her home after a short battle with a recurrence of cancer, following 23 years of being a thyroid cancer survivor. She was born in Ogden, Utah on an Army base at the end of WWII. For the past 50 years, Riverside was where she lived and restored her beloved and historic home. She was an incredibly strong-willed and devoted mother and grandmother. She attended both Michigan State University and University of Michigan for her college and graduate education. In her professional life, she was in private practice as a psychotherapist for 55 years, and later became an Adjunct Professor, and most recently Assistant Professor, of Counseling Psychology at California Baptist University (CBU) for nearly 14 years. She also served as Director of Clinical Training. Prior to CBU, she was an Adjunct Professor at Loma Linda University School of Behavioral Health/Social Work.
She loved caring for everyone around her: family, friends, and patients alike. Jan was known for reading, quilting, cooking, gardening, watercolor painting, and making exceptional memories everywhere she went. For years, she had a Hammond organ and played beautifully. Preceding her in death were her parents, Earl and Phoebe Urquhart; brother, John; grandchildren, Lillian and Gilbert; and her ex-husband, Cyril Stanfield III. She is survived by three sons, Matthew (Amy), John, and Mark (Anna); two sisters, Suzie (Victor) and Val (Ray); a sister-in-law Nancy (John); and eight grandchildren: Marigold, June, Marvin, Hunter, Jack, Hadley, Lawrence, and Alma.
A celebration of life is planned for August 17th, 2024 at the Grove Community Church.
