Mamey was born on March 27, 1943 at home in Detroit, Michigan to parents Jesse Wong and Yee Eng. She spent her childhood there before moving to Oakland California with her mother and four siblings. Mamey was the fourth child in the family. Mamey’s youth was difficult and she left home at the age of 18, then married when she was 23. Mamey gave birth to two wonderful children. In 1982, as a single mother, she moved to Southern California. Her life mission and greatest accomplishment was providing for, caring for, and loving Jessica and Michael.
Over the years, personal relationships and love were not easy for Mamey; her children came first. House to house (Northern California, South Bay, Long Beach, High Desert, to Riverside). Job to job (clerk, secretary, to Administrative Assistant). Life was complicated. No matter what the situation life brought, never too proud, she always pushed through and made a way! Strong, independent, caring, and loving. She was stern and strict, but also always had a smile and sense of humor.
Mamey said she was a “Star Child” because she had no parents and she was different than her siblings. Lucky to have two birthdays, she was actually born on February 16th, but her birth was not officially registered until March 27. So Jessica celebrated one and Michael the other. Christmas was her favorite holiday and she spoiled us ALL. We were so blessed to spend it with her this year.
Reading was her outlet as a child and that passion continued as an adult leaving her very self-educated. She loved to cook AND eat. She enjoyed watching crime shows from several decades. She listened to Elvis Presley and country music. She enjoyed doing crossword puzzles and playing Solitaire on her computer. Win or lose, she was always an Angels fan.
Mamey spent her later years, with her best friend and companion, her mini Doberman “Dim Sum.” She dedicated her time and love to family as much as possible. We all know we were loved, each in her own special way. She had her favorites though….her son Mike will always be her pride and joy. Her grand-daughter Nessa was the light of her life and in her arms since birth.
Mamey is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Jessica and Luis Rivera. Son and spouse, Michael Yaeger and Anthony Ross. Four grandchildren, John and wife Brenda, Janessa, Destyn, and David. One great granddaughter, Aliana.
A memorial service will be held at Magnolia Church, in the Loft, on January 14 at 2pm. The family is grateful for condolences.
