Our beloved mother, grandmother, aunt, sister, and friend, Carol Grace Jernigan Collier, returned home to Heavenly Father on Friday, December 22, 2017 after battling a short but sudden illness. Carol was born on August 8, 1953 in Savannah, Georgia to James Pershing Jernigan, Sr. and Carrie Mae Fender. Carol graduated from Savannah High School in 1971. Carol continued her education after moving to Utah. She received her undergraduate in Sociology in 1999 from the University of Utah and then received her Masters degree (LCSW) in Social Work from the University of Utah in 2005. Carol was a truth seeker who was inspired by a life of learning. She had a love of books and reading.
Carol had a deep and abiding love for her children, family, and our Savior, Jesus Christ. Carol was a convert to the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She joined the church at the tender age of 12. She was stalwart in her testimony of the Savior and His gospel.
Carol's greatest accomplishments were her children and grand children. Carol was a kind, loving, and compassionate mother. Carol was a single mother most of the time that she was raising her children and did the work of a mother and father! She taught her children the importance of music and singing. You could find Carol singing to her children all throughout their lives. Carol was a friend whose loyalty knew no bounds. Carol accepted all people as her friends and honored them by giving her friends unconditional love, support, and loyalty. Carol never met a stranger. She enjoyed helping others along their journeys of healing and forgiveness. She loved being a marriage and family therapist.
Carol is survived by her children Dawn (Brendon) Grames, Jennifer (Danny) Payne, Carrie (Rodney) Martinez, and Adam Collier. She also leaves behind her ten grandchildren: Cody (Trista) Grames, Cole Grames, Morgan Grames, Rachel (Eric) Hendrickson, Ethan Payne, Jeshua Miles, Janessa Miles, Jolie Miles, Nathaniel Martinez and Gracie Martinez and two great grandchildren, Carson Hendrickson and Marshall Hendrickson. She is also survived by her brothers (Bubbas) Joe Jernigan and Jerry Jernigan, as well as many nieces, nephews, and extended family. Carol leaves behind many wonderful and dear friends. Carol is preceded in death by parents James Pershing Jernigan, Sr, Carrie Mae Fender and brother, James P. Jernigan, Jr.
We, as Carol's children, would like to express our gratitude to the many wonderful people who cared for her during her illness. She had many wonderful family members, caretakers and friends that were by her side. Although our mama is gone from her earthly state, we have the knowledge and faith that we will see her again! What a joyous reunion it must have been for her to see her mama and daddy, her eldest brother Jimmy and many others of her loved ones that went before her.
May we all be able to find peace, comfort and solace in this difficult time by leaning on one another and by serving others. 2Corinthians 1:3-4 “Praise be to God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.”
