Jerry R Montgomery, beloved husband and father passed away on July 29, 2022, at the age 82 in the Murray IHC Hospital. Jerry was born on January 24, 1940, to Chester Louis Montgomery and Beverly Romijn in West Point, Utah. Jerry served in Amsterdam, Holland as an LDS missionary. Jerry met his beautiful wife of 60 years Geniel Wilhelmsen while attending Seminary at Davis High School. Jerry and Geniel were sealed for time and all eternity in the Idaho Falls Temple on August 16,1962, two weeks after Jerry returned from his mission in Holland.
Jerry graduated in 1958 from Davis High School and as a young man in the 1950's Jerry became interested in rocketry and nuclear physics along with collecting rocks and fossils. His school studies in math, science and electronics ultimately lead him to physics. Later Jerry learned there was a way to combine rock collecting with physics which lead to geophysics. Jerry obtained an A.S. in Electrical Engineering and a B.S. in Physics and Math from Weber State College in 1968. He earned his Ph.D. from the University of Utah in Geophysics and Geology in 1973. Jerry also studied at the University of Leeds in the U.K. for post doctorate studies/education. Jerry has written and published several papers for multiple scientific journals.
Jerry played a role in disproving cold fusion was a potential source of energy. He worked diligently to verify if the claims of others were legitimate, but while striving to do so found them false and submitted his data to repudiate claims regarding cold fusion as a source of energy.
Jerry worked for forty plus years in geophysics as a professional geologist. During this time Jerry invented and patented AquaTrackTM an innovative technology that maps groundwater. He also developed and patented several other proprietary technologies. Jerry started his career working in gravity mapping collecting over 12,000 gravity readings throughout Utah, creating the first gravity map for the State of Utah for his PhD. During his career he also worked in geomagnetism, geo-electricity, and geo-electromagnetics; all to investigate the hidden geologic structures of the earth.
Jerry was involved in various volunteer work throughout his life. Some of the more notable activities were through the Utah Astronomical society and Utah Department of Natural Resources. During the 1970’s Jerry helped build the Grim Astronomical telescope and SPOC Montgomery dome located in Stansbury Park, UT. Later on, Jerry and Geniel volunteered for many years at the Fielding Garr Ranch located on Antelope Island where they helped herd bison and teach about the history of the island.
Jerry had his 7th Degree Dan in Tae Kwon Do. Jerry along with his sons Rich and Alexander taught Tae Kwon Do and have helped several individuals obtain their black belts some of whom were even his grandchildren. Jerry loved to see the difference this discipline had in others' lives and never missed a chance to share it.
Jerry loved teaching and had an abundance of knowledge he shared. He was an adjunct professor in physics at Weber State University. He also taught courses at Salt Lake Community College and BYU Educational Center in chemistry, physics, and math.
Jerry loved investigating and researching Church History as well as doing genealogy. Jerry was a collector of rare and old Christian books as well as rare coins. He raised and showed Bouvier Des Flandres dogs, a large cow herding dog developed in Holland.
Jerry is survived by his wife Geniel W Montgomery and children, N. Rich Montgomery (wife Karyl), M. Wynne Farmer (husband David), Sarah E. Parry (husband Mark), and Alexander C. Montgomery (wife Becky). Sibling survivors are Annice Nixon and Eddie Montgomery. Jerry has 13 grandchildren and 3 great grandchildren.
Jerry is preceded in death by his parents Chester Louis and Beverly Montgomery, and his brother Louis R Montgomery. Jerry was welcomed in the hereafter with joyous barks by three of his beloved Bouviers, Force, Charlie, and Mezzo.
A viewing will be held on August 5, 2022, from 6-8 pm at the Welby 1st Ward House located at 9376 South 4000 West, West Jordan, Utah.
Funeral Services will be held August 6, 2022, at 10:00 am preceded by a viewing at 9:00 to 9:45 am at the Welby 1st Ward House.
