Don was born August 27, 1948, in Philadelphia, PA, the second of seven children, to James and Muriel McMahon. He graduated from Bishop Kenrick High School in Norristown, PA in 1966. He then enlisted in the United States Army and served as a helicopter crew chief during a tour of duty in Viet Nam. Upon discharge he enrolled at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University where he received his coveted Airframe and Powerplant license. He was initially employed servicing helicopters and airplanes for the United States Army Reserve in Washington, DC and was soon transferred to Orlando. In 1983 he began doing similar work for NASA before shifting to the Kennedy Space Center where he was a Quality Assurance Inspector for numerous International Space Station projects, retiring in 2013. While at NASA he remained active in the Army Reserve with the 348th Medical Detachment. He again served his country doing a tour of duty in the Middle East during Operation Desert Storm.
He was extremely proud of his military service. He will always be remembered for his practical jokes and his tremendous sense of humor which he retained until the end. The neighborhood has lost an irreplaceable master repairman.
Don is survived by his wife of 38 years Robin McMahon, his daughter Allison Lee Carpenter (Tony), and granddaughter Mayzie LaRue Carpenter.
