I went to Daniel Boone with Mike. He was always smiling and kind. He also had a hand in turning my ugly green Vega sideways in my parking space. I remembering him laughing when I looked so dumbfounded. I’ve thought about him often since. I’ve been in Florida since 1987. Sorry it wasn’t in the plans for us to reconnect. I’m sure he will be missed by those that knew and loved him. He will always be a happy memory for me. My condolences and prayers for his family and friends.

Mike and I played Football together in High School...I was always amazed by his strength and determination..as well as his kind and gentle nature..For several years after he went in the Navy, when he came home to Johnson City..I kept a key to my trailer where only he knew ..and he would show up and crash for a while from time to time..Sad to say life moved on and so did we, but Mike's friendship has and will always hold a special place in my heart. God bless and keep you Mike, and all your Family and loved ones!

THE LAUGH!!  was so contagious anytime I heard him in the office laughing I came running just to hear it!  I miss hearing him talk politics in the bull-pin! He was a great person and was always kind.  He will be missed by so many including myself.  He was an old sole and will forever be in the hearts of many.  May he rest in peace.

My name is Chris Surcey and I went to school with Mike at Daniel Boone and I still live in Boone Creek and I remember traveling to Cedar point in Boone Creek to Mike’s house and playing chess with him on cold winter days…. he would always get mad at me when I would win but it was always fun… I will always remember the football games between you me, Dave and Mike… Rest in peace, my friend and thanks for the memories……

The world is truly a less colorful place without Mike. Go easy Mike.

This picture was taken in Oct 2018, I got Mike to take a much needed Vacation, We were able to spend 7 Awesome relaxing days in the Mountains of  Northern AZ.  He befriended every critter there was, squirrels and Blue jays eating out of his hands, a cat, that decided he belong to Mike, and stayed with us our entire visit ( he belonged to the manager of the cabin rentals), a Black Chow dog that scared the crap out of both of us, he was very large and silent in his approach, until he was right there, we both thought he was a bear for a brief moment, then he stepped up to Mike and laid his head gently on Mike's lap, He got a good head rubb'in, then just  lumbered on his way, looking just like a bear in the woods.  We laughed so hard, Ate great food, had an Awesome time doing nothing! Mike relaxed and really seemed to enjoy his time. Fun fact: Did you know he like to watch "The Price is Right"!? 😁..... Mike, or "The Bug" as I called him, was my Best Friend for many years, and will always have a huge chunk of my Heart. Just look deep into that "Sailors" eyes, "young and old," and you can almost see his Soul, but you will definitely see the Love he had for his Family and his Friends!   Bug, you are missed and loved by so many. Thank you for sharing your Loving Heart with me over the years, because of you I have found my Happiness, and you will continue to be a big part of my Happiness for the rest of my days. I love you Bug, Rest Easy now, your work is done.

Mike, you will be missed more than you could ever believe.  So wish you had more time to spend with those that love you.

I worked with Mike at Underwater Engineering Services for more than 10 years.  He had worked as a commercial diver for much longer than that. Like a lot of us in the business, I didn’t know much about Mike outside of work.  What I do know is that Mike had a work ethic second to none and was liked and respected by his peers.  He had the unique ability to analyze a problem, work out a solution, and then jump in the water and do the work.

For those who may not have known Mike as a commercial diver, I thought I would share a short anecdote that says everything you need to know about him as a colleague.  Some years ago, UESI was hired by a large marine diving contractor to supplement their crews on a project the contractor was struggling with.  The UESI divers were blended with the contractor’s crew, so we were working for one of their dive supervisors.  Mike was part of the UESI contingent.  In fact, I think the contractor had asked for Mike specifically because of his expertise in underwater construction.  Since the UESI divers were part of a blended crew, we didn’t have our own supervisor.  Nevertheless, Mike took on the role of advocate for our folks.  Long scary story short, the contractor was running an unsafe job.  Mike attempted to work with their supervisor to correct this, but when things didn’t improve, Mike called us and recommended we pull our divers off the job.  We did, and Mike’s action removed our people from a dangerous situation that could easily have resulted in a tragedy. 

If you only knew Mike in a work setting, you might think he was just a hard-working old-school construction diver - which he was - but there was a lot more going on under that rough exterior than meets the eye.  Mike cared deeply about his work and even more about the people he worked with.  He will be missed.
