

Nell was born in Dublin Ga., and she came to south Brevard County, Fla. in the early 1950s to teach elementary school. A majority of her teaching career was spent at Indialantic Elementary School from 1963 until 1993. Nell arrived in Florida soon after graduating from her beloved University of Georgia, where she was a member of the Alpha Delta Pi Sorority. Nell was a past president of the Alpha Delta Pi Alumnae of South Brevard. She was an active member at Grace Lutheran Church in Melbourne Beach for more than 50 years. Nell also was active in many lineage societies as well as organizations including Delta Kappa Gamma, Meals on Wheels, Panhellenic and Friends of the Melbourne Library. Besides her community involvement, Nell possessed a lifelong passion for poetry and literature.
Nell lived in Melbourne Beach and on Surf Road for nearly 60 years where she was a fixture of the community and had many close friends and neighbors.
She was preceded in death by her loving husband - who she was married to for more than 30 years - Edward L. Mussler, Sr.; her sister, Augusta Vinson; grandson Benjamin “Bo” Adams and granddaughter Ashlyn Mendez Mussler. Survivors include three children: Nell Herring (Michael) of Longwood, Fla, Hollis Adams (Benjamin) of Mooresville, NC, Edward L. Mussler, II (Tammy) of Melbourne, Beach; eight grandchildren: Michael Scott Herring (Lori), Robert Herring, Nell Gray Grassby (Max), Molly Stansberry (Joseph), Hollis Adams, A.J. Mendez Mussler (Hadley), Edward L. Mussler III (Bre) and Adeline Marin (Lorenzo); nine great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
A celebration of Nell’s life will be held at 10 a.m., May 2, 2026, at the Life Event Center at Florida Memorial Gardens in Rockledge, Fla. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Friends of the Melbourne Library P.O.
