Born November 12, 1940, in Marion, North Carolina, Norman was the second youngest of seven children raised by his strong and loving single mother, Vesty O’delle Earley. From an early age, he stood out for his determination, quick wit, and ability to make others feel like family.
At Marion High School, Norman made his mark both on and off the field. He played football—serving as co-captain his senior year—ran track and captained the wrestling team as a junior and senior. His classmates named him “Friendliest,” a fitting title for someone who never met a stranger.
After graduation, Norman worked at a local gas station where he first developed his legendary work ethic and knack for storytelling. In the early 1960s, he and his lifelong friend Graham Clontz headed south to Florida, chasing sunshine and opportunity.
Shortly after arriving in Florida, Norman struck up a friendship with Speedy and Johnny Catechis, owners of the Dixie Motel and Lounge. He started out working nights on the switchboard and eventually became their general manager.
It wasn’t long before Norman discovered his true calling. Taking a leap of faith, he opened his own place in Cocoa Beach—the Bear and the Bull. From there, his vision only grew. He purchased the OK Bar, transforming it into Norman’s Food and Spirits—a Cocoa landmark where friends quickly became family.
Over the years, Norman went on to open and operate several other beloved establishments, including the Lone Cabbage Fish Camp, each one infused with his trademark hospitality, grit, and humor.
When Norman wasn’t hard at work, he was often found on the slopes as a member of the Space Coast Ski Club, on the golf course, or gathered with friends for a game of dice or cards. He had a passion for travel—though he grumbled about leaving work—and a love of history, star-gazing, and swapping stories. A proud Florida Gator fan, he rarely missed a game and could always be counted on to add colorful commentary from the sidelines of his living room.
In 1982, Norman married the love of his life, Carrie. Together, they shared 42 years filled with laughter, adventure, and unwavering devotion. He was a proud father to Jaime and Norma, and a doting “Pop Pop” to Michael Norman and Lynlee Jo Lucent. To his family and countless friends, Norman will be remembered for his booming laugh, sharp wit, stubborn streak, and the generosity that defined his life.
Norman’s legacy extends far beyond the businesses he built; it lives in the community he nurtured—through every loyal customer, shared meal, and moments of laughter.
A Celebration of Norman’s life will be held on September 5, 2025 at the Merritt Island Moose Lodge.
