Fletch died peacefully in his sleep in his home in the Indian River Colony Club (IRCC). Nancy, his wife of 63 years, preceded him in death.
He is survived by son, Bill (Robin) and daughter, Claudia (Bob Cavanaugh), 4 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Fletch and Nancy were active at IRCC and Fletch played golf through age 92. Volunteering for the Army Air Corps, Fletch flew 35 combat missions as a Navigator in B-17s with the 388th Bomb Group (hvy) 8th Air Force. He earned his first of six Air Medals on September 5, 1944. Upon completion of his 35 missions, he returned to the States; as WW II ended, he was released from service and attended the University of Connecticut. At UConn he met Nancy, played intercollegiate golf and swam (not too many men in 45-46) and earned undergraduate and graduate degrees. He was recalled for Korea and made the Air Force his career, retiring in 1970 as a LTC with the award of a Legion of Merit for exceptionally meritorious conduct in the performance of outstanding service.
He became a Program Coordinator Area Administrator for the University of Southern California (USC) in Washington DC, and then for the Pacific out of Honolulu, Hawaii. In 1988, having retired from USC, he and Nancy moved to IRCC to be closer to their grandchildren.
We would like to thank his wonderful long time caregivers, Louise, Tammy, Marlene, Josephine, and Earline and recent help, including Sandy and Donna, from Senior Partners.
Our father was a professional officer, an excellent educator, an above average golfer, and couldn’t carry a tune in a bucket. Most importantly, he was a good guy. We will miss him.
We are awaiting a date of internment at Arlington National Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, please donate to the charity of your choice.
