Born on April 22, 1953, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, to John Koontz Sr. and Gladys Koontz, John grew up in Arden Hills with his siblings, Catherine, Mike, and the late Tommy. His legendary work ethic began at the young age of 12, working for his father at Town & Country Sign in New Brighton, MN. After graduating from Mounds View High School in 1971, he continued to hone his craft.
In 1979, John and his late wife, Evelyn (Terry) Koontz, moved from Minnesota to Rogers, Arkansas, seeking a new beginning. With a bold vision and entrepreneurial spirit, they founded Sign Artists in 1982. Their first workshop was a humble $45-a-month storage garage, where every sign was meticulously hand-painted, long before the age of computers. Though proud of his Minnesota roots, John was immensely proud of how Sign Artists grew from that small garage into the successful business it is today, a testament to his dedication and artistry.
Outside of work, John’s greatest joys were simple. He loved spending time at his beloved property, "The Farm," and cherished every moment he spent with his grandchildren, who were the light of his life.
John is preceded in death by his parents, John Sr. and Gladys; his wife, Evelyn (Terry); and his brother, Tommy.
His legacy of hard work and love for family will be carried on by his survivors: his devoted son, Jamie Koontz; his loving girlfriend, Carla Parks; and his adored grandchildren, Aiden, Ava, Isla, and Sienna. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the countless people he connected with throughout his life.
