

Born in Neodesha, Kansas, Steven grew up in Coffeyville, Kansas, where he developed a strong sense of community and service. His educational journey took him to Coffeyville Community College and later to Emporia State University. In pursuit of a greater calling, Steven enlisted in the United States Army, where he proudly served for 22 years. His military career was marked by courageous service in Vietnam, followed by a transition into Military Intelligence and ultimately the Criminal Investigation Division (CID). His military career took him to various locations across the country and overseas, including El Paso, Texas; Fort McClellan, Alabama; Lansing, Kansas; and Mannheim, Karlsruhe, and Worms, Germany. After retiring from the military, he and his wife, Ruth, settled in Oklahoma.
Steven's dedication to service continued after his military career when he joined the Oklahoma State Bureau of Investigation (OSBI). For 20 years, he served the Northeast Region of Oklahoma, working closely with local law enforcement on numerous cases.
Steven is survived by his beloved wife of 42 years, Ruth Cartagenanutter; his two daughters, Cynthia Skinner (Jason Skinner) and Nicole Boggs Lewis (Caleb Lewis); and six cherished grandchildren: John Boggs, Deacon Boggs, Sarah Boggs, Reilly Lewis, Maddox Skinner, and Hayes Skinner, as well as one great-grandchild, Ayva Bivins. He is also remembered fondly by his first wife, Beate Maluche, with whom he shared a daughter, Nicole Lewis.
Beyond his professional life, Steven had a passion for Westerns and was never seen without his iconic cowboy hat. He enjoyed woodworking, spending time with friends, often engaging in target shooting, where he shared his love for firearms and the outdoors. Throughout his life, Steven found immense joy in spending time with family, entertaining friends, and traveling both domestically and internationally. He particularly loved boating on Grand Lake, where he created treasured memories with those he loved.
Steven A. Nutter will be deeply missed by all who knew him. His legacy of service, love, and unwavering dedication to family will forever remain in the hearts of those he touched.
A memorial service will be held to honor Steven's life and contributions to his family and community at St. Elizabeth Catholic Church in Grove, Oklahoma, on July 18th, at 10am. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital in his memory.
